Do you believe in magic…so goes the song! But there’s lots of magic happening too in food prompting one to beg for the recipe. And the usual question is…what is the secret ingredient?
In the case of Magic cookie bars (I found lots of blogposts on these but really didn’t pay much attention), the magic comes from the use of sweetened condensed milk. I found two versions.

Product: Sweetened Condensed Milk
BOB RECIPE: Magic Cookie Bars (Version 1)
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
1/4 cup light brown sugar, packed
2 cups graham cracker crumbs
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1 cup shredded coconut
1 cup pecan or walnut, coarsely chopped
1 2/3 cups sweetened condensed milk.
Preheat oven to 350 F.
Place butter in an 8 inch square pan; heat in oven until melted.
Combine brown sugar and graham cracker crumbs in a bowl and sprinkle evenly over melted butter. In layers, ad chocolate chips, coconut and nuts. Pour condensed milk over top.
Bake 30 minutes. Allow to cool completely before slicing.
Product: Graham Cracker Crumbs
BOB RECIPE: Magic Cookie Bars (Version 2)
2 cups graham cracker crums
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup (1 stick) margarine or butter, melted
1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
1 1/4 cups seedless red raspberry preserves
1 1/3 cup flaked coconut
1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
In small bowl combine crumbs and sugar. Add margarine or butter. Toss until combined. Press onto bottom of 13 x 9 x 2 inch baking pan. Evenly drizzle sweetened condensed milk over crumbs. Refrigerate for 10 minutes.
Spoon preserves over top. Sprinkle with coconut and nuts. Bake at 350 F. for 25 to 30 minutes or until light brown.
Cool completely. Cut into bars. Store, loosely covered, at room temperature.
Yield: 24 servings
