Included in our media kit (courtesy of Silver Dollar City, MO) was a 2 lb bag of Sullivan’sMill’s yellow corn meal. 2 corn meal recipes were printed at the back of the bag, as follows:
SILVER DOLLAR MILL 1804 RECIPE FOR REAL OLD-FASHIONED CORN BREAD
1 cup of corn meal
1 cup of buttermilk
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
3 tablespoons melted shortening or BACON DRIPPINGS
Do not sift meal, mix all ingredients together and bake in greased pan or skillet at 400 F for 35 to 40 minutes. Serves 4.
CRUSTY (SOFT CENTER) SPOON BREAD
Combine ingredients below, then sift:
1/2 cup corn meal
1/4 cup flour
1 tablespoon sugar
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 beaten egg
1 cup milk (blend batter well)
Melt 2 heaping tablespoons butter in baking dish, pour in batter. Pour generous 1/2 cup milk over top.
Bake in 375 degree oven about 45 minutes.
